Introduction to Copyrighting 101

In almost all countries all over the globe, copyright violation and infringement remains a very hot and controversial issue. You would come across discussions about these in newspapers, websites, community forums, social bookmarking sites and even in some blog sites. People most often discuss the grave importance of copyrighting, and what it can do to other people if they don’t copyright - some would even tell their experiences about their copies getting stolen or getting pirated.

If you are not so sure what copyrighting means, this is a term that is used to protect other people’s works from getting stolen. This is automatically granted to every person who has finished one project or work - this is done immediately. However, you must understand that even though you opt not to register your copyrights, there are still a few steps and points that you have to consider to guarantee and remain safe and protected from infringement at all times.

Generally speaking, copyrighting is not about protecting the ideas, but it is the manner of protecting how these ideas have been delivered. For instance, a news reporter would discuss a recent activity done in this city - another news anchor cannot use the same and exact words that the first anchor has used, because the copyrights have been granted to that anchor already.

Another instance which makes it easier to understand is the use of logos - one company may use an cat for instance for their logo, another company may use the same animal, but it should not convey the same appearance as well as the idea.

The length or the span of time that one work remains protected depends whether the work has been published or not. Usually, one work that is considered to be a literary piece of work can be protected for more than fifty years - no matter whether the owner is still living or already dead.

Though, many authors and companies usually avoid using other’s work even though its copyright has already expired. It is still considered stealing by many even though they have the legal rights to do so since the copyrights have already expired.

Expired or not, it is much uncalled for to use other’s work since you are allowed to use their ideas just not the exact same way that its author delivered it.
